Internet as an ecosystem

It has taken some time and energy to recover from the 1923Turk-Grup hack. A recurring question while working through the rebuild and backups was -- why did they do it? Was it because they can and for the trophies? Are they malicious? Yes, they fatally wiped all the data from a colleague's X-server -- leaving him gasping in disbelief!

The internet is said to be an ecosystem (see photo above) and like biological ecosystems there are prey, predators and parasites. Darwinian evolution operates whereby the weak and the feeble are weeded out for the overall good of the ecosystem.

After my predator attack I have improved my systems with better passwords, tighter controls, better structure and more frequent off-site backups. Could I survive another attack? Maybe not, but now I have a recovery strategy in place.
